Meet our Shamans

Ayahuasca - Maestra Justina
Maestra Justina carries an impressive legacy: she has 41 years of unparalleled expertise as a master healer. As a direct descendant of the esteemed lineage of Merayas, the highest-ranking Shipibo Shamans, she is a proud bearer of ancestral wisdom. Her journey unfolded in the serene community of Vencedor, along the banks of the Pisqui River in the upper Ucayali. From an early age, her intuitive connection with the Chaikunis, ascended spirits safeguarding the jungle, kindled her bond with nature's abundance.
Answering her calling in her teenage years, Maestra Justina embarked on a path of plant medicines under her uncle's guidance, a traditional Shipibo Onanya. Her transformative journey was marked by a two-year dieta with Camalonga, a master plant enabling her to perform Shamanic Surgeries — an extraordinary skill she practices at Arkana. Over time, she enriched her medicine chest, dieting over 50 plants and trees, all while serving as a community healer.
We are honored to have Maestra Justina lead our Arkana Shaman team. She embodies the essence of a jungle healer, radiating virtues that transcend time. Immerse yourself in her presence and wisdom during our Ayahuasca retreats, and witness the real life magic she imparts to all seekers.

Peyote - Marakame Juan
Guiding our peyote ceremonies is the esteemed Marakame Juan, a Huichol elder hailing from the Highlands of Jalisco. The Huichol, or Wixáritari as they resonate with, label their revered spiritual leaders as Mara'akáme, meaning "those who see and know."
Marakame Juan embodies this profound connection between our world and the spiritual realm. Chosen from a tender age, he was nurtured by his predecessors to master the sacred art of healing.
Central to their spiritual rites is Hikuri, the revered peyote cactus. Annually, Marakame Juan and his tribe embark on a spiritual expedition to Wirikuta, their ancestral desert, to harvest this potent plant. This voyage requires immense preparation, encompassing physical cleansing through diet and fasting, and abstaining from worldly indulgences to attain spiritual purity.
During the ceremony, enveloped by the warmth of Tatéwari (Grandfather Fire), they immerse in soulful chants that last through the night, invoking interdimensional gateways known as nierikas to harness the peyote's healing and blessings.
At Arkana, we deeply cherish our association with the Wixárika traditions and Marakame Juan. Upholding their ancient wisdom is not just our privilege but a commitment to future generations.

Niños Santos - Maestra Jazmin
Our Psilocybe Mushroom ceremonies will be run by Maestra Jazmin Pinedo Casimiro, a Mazatec medicine woman from Huautla de Jiménez, Oaxaca, the town of Maria Sabina. She proudly carries the lineage of her mother Abuela Julieta Casimiro, a former member of the Council of the 13 Indigenous Grandmothers. Upon Abuela Julieta’s passing, Maestra Jazmin inherited all of her knowledge and healing responsibilities in her community.
She started working with niños santos (psilocybe mushrooms) at a very young age assisting her mother and grandmother in their rituals. In recent years, she has had the opportunity to travel around the world sharing Medicine in the traditional Mazatec vigils keeping alive the traditions that Maria Sabina made famous in the 1960s.

How our guests rate us

Arkana provides the right setting, the tools you need to create the right set, and the right doses (ayahuasca and peyote during my stay) —and it’s all completely safe and thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening and legal. All accomplished with the care and expertise and respect you would expect from a completely professional organization.

The week that I was at Arkana Yucatan tops off as one of the best weeks of my life. Everything that I went there for, healing and connection was orchestrated for me beautifully but the Universe and delivered through the plant medicine and the people at the retreat. The facilitators were great examples of love and exceptional service. The visitors like myself, all strangers at first, transformed into a wonderful family. The facility is located amongst beautiful jungle vegetation but still well manicured. The architecture of the buildings is a mix of old world and modern to keep your interest. The only thing that would have made it better being there was if I had my own bathroom in my room. But not having one, is a small price to pay for the magical experience I had there. Next time, I will just be more prepared by packing items that will keep me more physically comfortable throughout the week (clothes, etc.). Yes, there WILL be a next time!

This was my second Arkana retreat. I attended the Amazon retreat in July and had such an amazing experience I decided to attend their retreat in the Yucatán. These retreats are an investment in myself and that investment resulted in a complete transformation. It’s hard to put into words just how profound this experience has been. All my life I have been searching for an intimate connection to the universe. I have always believed there was a force out there greater than me. But now I can say with absolute conviction, I know there is.The setting and the staff are second to none. The most loving group of gifted individuals who truly want to share their knowledge and assist you in every way along your journey.
Frequently asked questions
Is ayahuasca safe?
Ayahuasca is extremely safe when used responsibly. In other words: following a disciplined approach in observing safety protocols at all times, not serving medicine to guests whose medical conditions are contraindicated, and having expert healers with years of experience leading the ceremonies.
What conditions can be treated with ayahuasca?
Ayahuasca is not a magic cure-all overnight pill. It is a powerful tool that has been sought out by spiritual seekers for its visionary properties as well as for its ability to treat medical conditions of the mind, body and spirit.
Traditionally, it was the village shamans who would drink the ayahuasca brew and then diagnose the “sober” patient, with the plant spirit directing the shaman to the correct plants to use as medicine and the course of treatment for healing.
Nowadays, researchers are investigating claims, some of which remain anecdotal. There’s compelling evidence that shamanic healing works and is especially effective for emotional, psychological and physical issues such as: chronic depression, anxiety, addiction and alcoholism, trauma related afflictions, and sexual abuse among others.
How can I prepare myself for an Ayahuasca retreat?
We highly recommend taking the time to prepare your mind and spirit in addition to your body. This will be time well spent and it will allow you to get the most of your experience. A good starting point is to ask yourself what your true intention for the retreat is: what you want to get out of the experience. Having a clear direction enables clear results.
It is helpful to renounce all expectations; when you do research and come across testimonials, understand that those are someone else’s experience. Remember to always trust the process and know that the medicine will give you not what you want, but what you need. Be aware that the process is not always pleasant but it is always beneficial. Surrender and give yourself completely to the experience with an open mind and heart.
On a practical level, it is highly beneficial to practice yoga or meditation in your daily routine. Disciplines that will help you quiet the mind so you can take a deep dive inside during the retreat.

Are there any contraindications to Ayahuasca?
Yes, people who have been diagnosed with Schizophrenia, Bipolar disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder are not good candidates for ayahuasca. As a policy, we do not serve medicine to people with these conditions as it may bring about unwanted manic episodes. As much as we want to help everyone, we do not want to worsen anyone’s condition.
People with chronic epilepsy, high blood pressure, heart conditions or diabetes must consult with us before booking a retreat. Eligibility to participate is determined on a case-by-case basis and is based on each individual’s risk factors.
What happens in an Ayahuasca ceremony?
Some people experience strong visions, some people connect with medicine on the physical level to receive healing.
Sometimes visions may be distractful, in this case, the medicine may guide you through physical sensations such as: yawning, vomiting, diarrhea, shaking, crying, and sweating. In any case, you should know that the medicine is working on you in a way that suits you the best. All you have to do is to breathe, relax your body and let the medicine do its magic.
Purging is one of the most important stages of the ceremony since purging is considered to be a cleansing process. Everyone is experiencing different types of purging. Here are some of the most common ones: yawning, vomiting, diarrhea, shaking, crying, and sweating.
Along with the shamans, you will be accompanied by an incredible team of facilitators that are well-trained in helping you with anything you need during each ceremony. Just turn your flashlight on, and one of us will come to help you.
What kind of diet should I follow prior to the retreat?
One of the most important aspects of preparing for a retreat is nutrition. By observing the Dieta in advance you are starting the process of cleansing and deepening your ability to connect with the medicine.
During the 2 wks prior to the retreat, we recommend:
- Staying well hydrated, eating healthy: lots of fruits and veggies
- Avoiding pork (very important) and red meats in general
- Minimizing salt, sugar and irritants (caffeine, spices, alcohol)
